The TBC Classic Gold Farming Methods That Actually Work

Three characters, one gold making rotation, and enough spreadsheet habits from a computing science degree to actually track what's working.

I’ve had a main sat at seventy since fairly early in TBC Classic’s run, plus two alts I mostly play for their professions, and between the three of them I’ve tried nearly every gold making method that gets recommended in general chat, some of them properly, some of them badly enough to know they’re not worth repeating. None of it is complicated. It just takes doing the maths once and then actually turning up.

Professions cost gold, respeccing costs gold, and consumables for progression content cost more gold than either of those, so treating gold making as a proper rotation rather than an afterthought stops being optional fairly quickly. These are the methods I keep coming back to, whether I’m gearing a fresh alt or funding a main that’s already raiding.

Mote farming, and why Void Ridge specifically

Void Ridge in Hellfire Peninsula, west of Zeth’Gor, is the best Mote of Shadow farm in the game right now. Both Vacillating Voidcaller and Collapsing Voidwalker spawn there in dense packs, both have a roughly one in four chance to drop a mote, and the respawn timer is short enough that pulling a full loop rarely means standing around waiting for the next pack. Group a few of them up, clear the pull, and the next one is usually back before you’ve finished looting the last.

On my server this was comfortably worth 250 to 300 gold an hour, and Primal Shadows made from ten motes each are in constant demand for Shadow Resistance gear, so the floor under that price isn’t going anywhere soon. Wowhead has a proper breakdown of the Primal Shadow farm if you want the full mob list and a map.

If Void Ridge is camped, which happens, the fallback is flying loops through Zangarmarsh picking off Bog Lords and Bog Giants for Mote of Water and the odd Mote of Air. It’s slower than a proper hyperspawn, but a few hundred gold an hour from a zone nobody’s fighting you over is still a few hundred gold an hour.

Dungeon farming and boosting

With no attunement requirements left standing in the way of raiding, a lot of players are running alts through to seventy as fast as possible, and that’s made boosting one of the steadier income streams in the game. Mage and Paladin are the two classes built for it: a Mage can pull and AoE down an entire pack with Blizzard or a Flamestrike funnel, and a Paladin can tank the same pull behind Consecration and a bubble reset when things go wrong. Slave Pens and Mana Tombs are the two most requested boosts at the moment, short enough to run repeatedly and popular enough that customers rarely need chasing.

It’s not only a solo Mage or Paladin game either. A Warrior and Shaman pair can duo most of the Auchindoun and Coilfang instances without much trouble, and the pre-sixty dungeons, Scarlet Monastery and Stratholme especially, are still worth running for players levelling alts who’d rather skip the grind entirely.

GDKPs

A GDKP is a raid where every drop gets auctioned to the raid instead of handed out on rolls, and the gold from those auctions gets split between everyone who showed up. Recent nerfs have made Tempest Keep and Serpentshrine Cavern considerably more forgiving, and most of the server still hasn’t finished gearing out of Lady Vashj and Kael’thas, so demand for spots hasn’t dropped off. A few hundred gold a week from attending is realistic, and that goes up substantially if you’re the one organising the run, tanking, or consistently topping the meters, since all three usually come with a bigger cut.

Auction house flips and profession shuffles

Vendor shuffles are the boring, reliable end of gold making, and boring reliable gold is still gold. A few that are worth setting up:

  • Buy out cheap Runecloth or Netherweave Cloth and turn it into bandages with First Aid, then sell the bandages straight to a vendor
  • Cross check the price of raw ore against bars, and the price of Netherweave Cloth against Netherweave Bolts, since one side of that pair is regularly underpriced
  • Craft Purified Jaggal Pearls if you’ve got Jewelcrafting at 325 or higher. It only needs a Jaggal Pearl and a Purified Draenic Water, both cheap, and the vendor sell price on the result is high enough that the recipe pays for itself even before you factor in anyone actually wanting to buy one
  • Disenchant anything you loot from dungeon farming or boosting runs rather than vendoring it, since enchanting materials hold their value far better than green items do

Disenchanting in particular is worth leaning into at the moment, since a lot of players are training Enchanting up for the new arena season, which tends to push shard and dust prices up rather than down.

Dailies

An optimised daily route is one of the most reliable sources of raw gold in the game, and on a good server a tight loop nets somewhere around 70 gold in under an hour. The daily battleground win is worth doing regardless of how the gold looks, since the honour it hands you is worth more than the equivalent time spent farming for PvP gear directly.

Netherwing dailies are worth planning for specifically. The chain starts with Vindicator Nuurem or Commander Arren Vindicator in Shadowmoon Valley, requires Expert Riding to progress reputation past Neutral, and Artisan Flying to push further once you’re there. Once it’s unlocked, there are three daily quests available to everyone and a fourth for anyone with a gathering profession, and the eggs themselves are worth collecting on top of the daily gold, since a fully levelled netherdrake mount is a status symbol as much as a reward.

Professions in general

Any profession with a cooldown attached is worth using, whether that’s a cloth cooldown, an Engineering or Blacksmithing crafted item that only convenience buyers want, or a batch of potions nobody else on the server can be bothered to sit and brew. Supply arbitrage never really stops working either, since checking the raw material price against the processed price catches someone underselling almost every day. Convenience is the thing to sell into. If a profession involves buying a bulk item at all, someone’s paying extra to skip the buying part.

Fishing doesn’t get enough credit. It’s slow, it’s relaxing, and stacked Fillet of Icefin fish or Golden Fishsticks turn a boring hour into a genuinely decent one, particularly with a raiding guild nearby that can’t be bothered fishing for its own feasts.

Honourable mentions

A few smaller earners that add up without deserving their own section:

  • Badge of Justice farming from heroics converts into Primal Nether through G’eras in Shattrath, and Primal Nethers feed directly into some of the best profession recipes going, so heroics are worth running for badges even once the gear stops being an upgrade
  • Brilliant Glass, a Jewelcrafting transmute that turns uncommon gems into rare ones over about twenty hours, picked up a small chance at an epic gem in patch 2.4.2, which means low quality green gemstones you’d normally vendor are worth holding onto
  • The monthly reputation reward from the Consortium is worth collecting if you’re exalted with them, since the gem inside is occasionally worth considerably more than the five minutes it takes to turn in
  • Scholomance is quietly one of the best farms in the game for Dark Runes, which never stop being in demand for raiding consumables. Necromancers and Dark Summoners near the entrance drop them, there’s no attunement or profession requirement to get in, and it’s one of the more approachable farms for anyone newer to the game
  • Arena boosting is controversial and only a handful of players actually run it seriously, but with a strong new arena season live, the gold on offer for it isn’t small

None of this is exotic. It’s mostly turning up consistently to the methods that were already working before anyone made a guide out of them, which is most of what gold making in this game has ever actually been.
